Former Sky News presenter Adam Boulton has issued a grovelling apology on X after making insensitive comments about Ann Widdecombe following the launch of a murder investigation into her death. Boulton described the former Conservative minister as a "spinster," an "old maid," a "battleaxe," and a "bruiser" during media appearances, drawing widespread condemnation.
Boulton's Apology and Explanation
Boulton admitted he was "seriously wrong and insensitive" in his remarks. He said: "I got the timing and tone of my initial word portrait of her wrong." He explained that he was asked to contribute as an obituarist but acknowledged his approach was premature. "My choice of words on the spur of the moment was clumsy. I did not intend to offend though obviously I did," he added.
Backlash from Public Figures
Former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies condemned Boulton's comments, stating: "These men are truly vile. Lots of things I disagreed with Ann Widdecombe on, but these are very unpleasant & unnecessary comments." Political commentator Nicholas Lissack also expressed anger, calling Boulton's remarks a "disgraceful" rant on Sky News.
Murder Investigation Details
Ann Widdecombe was found dead in her home on July 9 with serious injuries. A 26-year-old British man was arrested but later released and is no longer a suspect. Police believe she was attacked 24 hours before her body was discovered, after she failed to appear for a video interview with Channel 5. A local reported seeing a suspicious man in hiking gear near her property early on the day she is believed to have died.
