A harrowing murder case in Nottingham has reached its conclusion, with a jury convicting Carl Westcarr for the brutal killing of his partner, Faye Caliman. The conviction was secured in part by the heartbreaking testimony of the couple's own young daughter.
The court heard how the three-year-old girl repeatedly told family members the devastating words: "Daddy killed mummy." This chilling statement became a crucial piece of evidence against the 39-year-old Westcarr.
A Drug-Fuelled Attack
The tragedy unfolded on May 9th, 2022, at the family's home in Nottingham. Prosecutor Karim Khalil KC detailed how Westcarr, after consuming a potent form of cannabis known as shatter, launched a violent and sustained attack on the 33-year-old Ms. Caliman.
The assault was so severe that it caused catastrophic injuries, including 13 broken ribs and extensive damage to her brain and eyes. The prosecution argued that Westcarr's altered state from the drug led to a "loss of control," resulting in the fatal violence.
A Chilling Discovery and a Daughter's Anguish
Following the attack, Westcarr made a panicked call to his mother, who rushed to the scene. It was there that she discovered her granddaughter sitting beside her mother's lifeless body. The little girl's simple yet horrifying explanation of what happened marked the beginning of the case against her father.
Despite Westcarr's defence claiming he had no memory of the event and was in a "psychotic state," the jury at Nottingham Crown Court found him guilty of murder after over 11 hours of deliberation.
A Family's Life Shattered
The case highlights the devastating consequences of drug-related violence. Faye Caliman, a mother and carer, had her life brutally cut short. Her daughter, now in the care of relatives, will forever bear the emotional scars of that day.
Carl Westcarr now faces a mandatory life sentence, with the judge to determine the minimum term he must serve. The case stands as a sombre reminder of the potential for extreme violence linked to substance abuse.
