A prolific burglar who discharged himself from hospital to evade police after sustaining life-changing injuries in a car crash has been jailed for a string of offences across Kent.
A Spree of Invasive Crimes
George Dunn, 42, from Maidstone, stole items worth more than £3,000 from at least five properties between June and July 2025. His haul included sentimental war medals, watches, and handbags. Kent Police officers, who were actively investigating the burglaries, found crucial DNA evidence and CCTV footage linking Dunn to the crimes.
During their investigation, Dunn was involved in a serious single-vehicle collision in the early hours of July 20 in Tunbridge Wells. He crashed his car into a wall and a fence. At the time of the crash, Dunn was disqualified from driving and had no insurance.
Flight from Hospital and Further Offending
Despite being in a life-threatening condition, Dunn attempted to flee the scene as police arrived. Firefighters had to cut him from the wreckage before he was rushed to a London hospital. Before he was medically fit for a police interview, Dunn discharged himself in a deliberate attempt to avoid speaking to officers.
Remarkably, just one month later in August, Dunn committed a sixth burglary at a home in Biddenden. He was spotted by a vigilant neighbour as he fell out of a window during the break-in. This led to a renewed police effort to track him down.
Arrest and Sentencing
Officers finally arrested Dunn on October 15. He was charged with six counts of burglary and multiple traffic offences. At Maidstone Crown Court, he pleaded guilty to all charges.
On December 23, Judge Philip Statman sentenced Dunn to six years and nine months in prison. Detective Inspector Lisa Featherstone of Kent Police stated: "Dunn is a prolific offender who was determined to continue committing these invasive crimes. Not even a life-changing injury deterred him, and he discharged himself from hospital to not only try and evade the consequences of his actions but to continue offending."
She added: "This was a lengthy investigation and officers worked hard to link Dunn to multiple burglaries and driving offences across the county. I’d like to thank the victims for their continued support throughout and hope they find some comfort in knowing Dunn has been locked up for these crimes."
