A Birmingham man who systematically defrauded his childhood friend of nearly £300,000 to bankroll his gambling addiction and lavish lifestyle has been jailed for three years and four months.
Michael Rourke, 35, exploited his position of trust to drain his victim's savings over an 18-month period, spending the stolen funds on luxury holidays to Dubai, designer clothing from Harrods, and relentless gambling sessions.
The Betrayal of Friendship
The court heard how Rourke had been friends with his victim since their school days, making the betrayal particularly devastating. He gained access to his friend's financial accounts under false pretences, then proceeded to make numerous unauthorized transfers to his own accounts.
Prosecutor Matthew Brook told Birmingham Crown Court: "This was a significant breach of trust against a close, childhood friend. The defendant used the money to fund an extravagant lifestyle well beyond his means."
Lavish Spending Spree
Evidence presented in court revealed how Rourke splurged the stolen money on:
- Multiple luxury holidays including trips to Dubai
- High-end shopping at premium retailers including Harrods
- Substantial gambling losses at various casinos
- Expensive designer clothing and accessories
Meanwhile, his victim was left facing financial ruin, having lost his entire life savings to someone he considered one of his closest friends.
Justice Served at Birmingham Crown Court
Judge Sarah Buckingham condemned Rourke's actions during sentencing, stating: "This was a gross breach of trust of a long-standing friendship. You systematically took money over a significant period of time to fund a lifestyle of gambling and luxury."
In addition to the prison sentence, Rourke was made subject to a restraining order and will face proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act to recover whatever funds remain.
The case serves as a stark warning about the devastating consequences of gambling addiction and the importance of financial vigilance, even with those closest to us.
