Brazen Budgie Thief Captured on CCTV in Merseyside Tyre Shop
In a bizarre and audacious incident, a thief was caught on camera snatching a pet budgie from its cage at a tyre shop in Prescot, Merseyside. The shocking footage, posted on social media by the shop owner, shows the unidentified man brazenly pocketing the bird after lingering in the store for over twenty minutes.
Strange Phone Call Preceded the Theft
John Fox, the owner of Prescot Tyres, revealed that he received a peculiar phone call earlier that day from a man claiming to rescue birds. The caller insisted that the budgie, which had been introduced to the shop to create a family-friendly atmosphere, should not be left alone for its mental health. Fox reassured the man that the bird was well cared for and considered the matter closed.
However, around two hours later, the man turned up at the shop, telling employees he had come to collect the bird. Fox was called and again insisted the bird was fine, prompting the man to leave. But he soon sneaked back into the busy shop, where he waited patiently, looking around nervously, before making his move.
CCTV Footage Captures the Brazen Act
The CCTV footage, a portion of which was shared online, shows the man dressed in a tracksuit sitting in front of the shop's front desk. He appears anxious, glancing around repeatedly before approaching the desk and fiddling with the cage door. After opening it, he shoves his hand inside, distressing the bird, which had been calmly flitting about its enclosure.
In a swift motion, the man clasps the budgie, plucks it from the cage, and stuffs it into his jacket pocket before walking out of the store. Fox described the footage as quite scary, noting that the thief seemed possessed by this bird and was even seen licking his lips while watching himself on the CCTV screen.
Shop Owner and Employees Left Gobsmacked
Fox and his employees were left furious and gobsmacked by the incident. They had introduced the budgie to nurture a welcoming environment and were shocked to see their beloved pet stolen in such a bold manner. The shop owner expressed disbelief at the thief's actions, stating that the man appeared out of it during the ordeal.
