NHS Ambulance Worker Stole From Vulnerable Pensioners During 999 Calls - Shocking Betrayal of Trust
Ambulance worker jailed for stealing from elderly patients

A shocking breach of trust within the Welsh Ambulance Service has been exposed after a emergency care assistant systematically stole from vulnerable pensioners while responding to 999 calls.

Dean John Morris, 38, from Cwmbran, South Wales, betrayed his position of responsibility by targeting elderly patients during their most vulnerable moments. The court heard how Morris stole items including aftershave from a 94-year-old man and bank cards from multiple victims.

Systematic Targeting of the Vulnerable

Cardiff Crown Court was told how Morris's crimes came to light after multiple reports of missing property following ambulance call-outs. The investigation revealed a pattern of thefts occurring between December 2022 and March 2023.

Among his victims was a 94-year-old man who had his aftershave stolen after Morris attended his property. Other elderly patients reported missing bank cards and personal items following emergency medical visits.

Caught by Suspicious Colleagues

The ambulance worker's downfall began when concerned colleagues noticed suspicious behaviour and reported their concerns. An internal investigation was launched, leading to Morris's suspension and subsequent criminal charges.

Prosecutor Nuhu Gobir described how "the defendant was in a position of significant trust, attending the homes of vulnerable people, often in medical distress" when he committed these offences.

Justice Served With Prison Sentence

Morris pleaded guilty to multiple theft charges and was sentenced to 16 months in prison. Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke emphasised the severity of the breach of trust, stating that Morris had "abused his position for his own gain."

The Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust confirmed that Morris has been dismissed from his position. A spokesperson expressed deep regret over the incidents, acknowledging the profound impact on patient trust in emergency services.

Rebuilding Broken Trust

This case has raised serious questions about safeguarding vulnerable patients during emergency medical responses. The ambulance service has implemented additional safeguarding measures and encouraged staff and patients to report any suspicious activity immediately.

The sentencing serves as a stark reminder that those who betray the sacred trust placed in healthcare professionals will face serious consequences for their actions.
