A man who admitted a series of sexual assaults on Teesside has been sentenced to six years in prison and will be automatically deported from the United Kingdom.
Court hears details of 'fear' inflicted on victim
Jose Sibi, aged 46, appeared at Teesside Crown Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to one count of rape and two counts of attempted rape. The offences took place in the Teesside area several years ago.
In a powerful victim impact statement read to the court, the woman described the profound and lasting trauma caused by Sibi's actions. She revealed she can no longer sleep at night or concentrate on reading, as 'bad thoughts' constantly intrude. "Every day I live in fear," she said, while also expressing her determination to rebuild her life and move forward.
Judge orders deportation after partial sentence
Sentencing Sibi, Judge Anthony Hawks acknowledged the defendant's late guilty plea and his developing drinking problem as factors in mitigation. However, he imposed a significant custodial term.
Sibi was handed a total sentence of six years imprisonment. He was also placed on the sex offenders register for life and made subject to a restraining order prohibiting contact with his victim.
The judge delivered a clear message regarding Sibi's future in the country, stating that deportation would follow his time in prison. "At the two thirds stage, if not before, you will be automatically deported," Judge Hawks told the defendant.
Automatic removal for overseas offender
The court heard that Sibi, who is of no fixed abode and originally moved to the UK from India, was of previous good character prior to these offences. His deportation is set to occur once he has served a significant portion of his sentence on British soil.
This case underscores the legal provisions for removing foreign national offenders from the UK following serious convictions. The automatic deportation order ensures Sibi will be removed from the country upon eligibility, preventing his continued residence after release.
