Teacher Accused of Sexually Abusing Teens Broke House Arrest 85 Times
Maris Nichols, a 25-year-old science teacher from Douglasville, Georgia, allegedly breached her house arrest conditions 85 times within 27 days, according to new court documents. The breaches reportedly included traveling to locations where children were present.
Nichols was initially charged with having sex with a student and later re-arrested in May 2026 after investigators identified five additional alleged victims. She was released on a $74,000 bond (approximately £58,000) on May 21, with strict conditions barring contact with minors except for her six-year-old daughter.
Prosecutors are now seeking to have her held in custody pending trial, citing repeated violations of her release terms. Court documents indicate Nichols was only allowed to leave home for specific activities such as church services, medical appointments, court hearings, and meetings with her lawyers.
Extensive Violations of Release Conditions
Despite being fitted with an electronic monitoring tag, Nichols allegedly violated her house arrest conditions repeatedly. Court documents claim she broke her release terms 85 times in 27 days, including unauthorized trips to retail stores and fast-food establishments. Prosecutors noted, “The Defendant’s bond conditions clearly limited her movements to approved activities, including employment, religious services, attorney visits, medical appointments, and court appearances.”
They added, “However, the compliance report reflects that the Defendant repeatedly traveled to locations outside the scope of those approved activities, including retail stores and fast-food establishments.” Prosecutors further argued that her unauthorized travel to public locations, especially where children are frequently present, undermines the purpose of the bail conditions.
Multiple Charges and Alleged Victims
Nichols is also accused of violating her home curfew 38 times, according to the New York Post. Prosecutors stated that her “conduct while on bond demonstrates that no set of conditions will reasonably ensure compliance with the Court’s orders or adequately protect the public.” They claimed she poses a “significant threat to the community, risks reoffending, and risks intimidating witnesses.”
The former high school biology teacher and football operations manager faces 13 felony charges following a major investigation into alleged sexual abuse and grooming of students. She was first arrested on May 8 and again on May 20 after investigators identified five additional alleged victims. Both arrests were made by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
The Douglas County District Attorney’s Office has charged Nichols in a multi-victim indictment involving six teenage students, some allegedly under 16. Charges include two counts of child molestation, four counts of improper sexual contact by a school employee, four counts of grooming a minor for a sexual offence, and two counts of sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority.
