Husband Sought Medical Help Days Before Killing Wife

The trial of a man who killed his wife has heard from a GP who spoke to him days before the incident. Michael Davies, 57, is on trial at Newport Crown Court accused of murdering his 48-year-old wife at their home in Bryn Terrace, Cefn Cribwr, near Bridgend, on April 18 last year.

He denies murder but accepts he killed her and has told police he did so by strangling her between 7:30am and 8am that morning. On Thursday, the trial heard that Davies had a telephone appointment on April 15, three days before he killed his wife.

Dr Dennis Lu, of North Cornelly GP surgery, said Davies did not express how he was feeling and raised no concerns about any mental health issues that required immediate attention. In a statement, Dr Lu said Davies had requested the appointment because he was struggling with anxiety and sleep, and had run out of some medications, including Xanax and Fluoxetine, which he said he had prescriptions for in Abu Dhabi.

Dr Lu told him that Xanax was not available on the NHS, so he offered an alternative and gave a private prescription for Xanax. In the recording of the call, Dr Lu said he was prescribing tablets to tide him over before returning to Abu Dhabi.

The evidence came a day after Tracey Davies' daughter recalled hearing screams from inside the property after her mother's body was discovered lifeless on a bed. Danielle Young, the daughter of Tracey, told how she realised something was wrong and went to their house with a key. Shortly after, she heard people scream from inside and say: 'There's a knife.'

Tracey was found dead on a bed in one of the bedrooms. Davies had cuts to his throat and leg and was found slumped behind the bedroom door. He denies murdering his wife on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

The trial continues.
