Tragic Murder-Suicide Ends Divorce Battle for Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor

Cerina Fairfax, a 49-year-old mother-of-two and practicing dentist, was anticipating her freedom from a troubled marriage. Her divorce trial against her husband, former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, was scheduled to begin on Tuesday morning. Instead, in a shocking act of violence, Justin Fairfax, 47, shot and killed his wife early Thursday before turning the firearm on himself at their $1 million family home in Annandale, just outside Washington, D.C.

A Friend's Heartbreak and Final Conversation

Glennetta White, 66, Cerina's closest friend for 25 years, shared an exclusive and emotional account with the Daily Mail. "I kept telling her everything was going to be ok," White said, her voice filled with grief. "We had less than a week before the divorce trial. As far as Cerina was concerned, she had a few more days to go and it would all be over. She was finally going to be free."

The two women, who met at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry, maintained their deep bond even after White retired and emigrated to South Africa last year, speaking on the phone daily. Their final conversation occurred on Wednesday morning. "Cerina was in Giant getting some stuff for her office," White recalled. "She told me about the latest things that Justin had filed in the divorce. They were ridiculous. But she had talked to her attorney and she felt good. It was a pretty normal conversation. She was not in fear of her life - she was just desperate to get some normalcy back."

Less than twenty-four hours later, Glennetta White received the devastating call informing her that Cerina had been murdered. The couple's 16-year-old son, Cameron, discovered his mother's bullet-riddled body just after midnight on Thursday. Police confirmed the shooter was Justin Fairfax, Cerina's husband of nearly two decades.

"When her brother said Justin had killed Cerina I just cried and cried for 30 to 40 minutes," White said, choking back tears. "It's like an out of body experience. I still can't believe that it's true. It feels like losing Martin Luther King, to me."

A Political Career Derailed and a Marriage Unraveling

Justin Fairfax was once considered a rising star within the Democratic Party, serving as Virginia's lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022 and becoming only the second African American to win a statewide office in the Commonwealth. However, his political ascent came to an abrupt halt in 2019 when multiple women came forward accusing him of sexual assault. He denied allegations of raping one accuser and forcing another to perform oral sex. While Cerina publicly stood by her husband during the scandal, his mental health and their private life deteriorated severely in the aftermath.

Court filings and Glennetta White's account paint a picture of a man in decline. Justin reportedly drank heavily, locking himself away in his office surrounded by "empty wine bottles, trash and piles of dirty laundry." He also allegedly stole cash earmarked for his children's horse-riding lessons to purchase a handgun. Months later, he packed a suitcase and vanished. "Cerina found out that he was in the woods with the gun," White told the Daily Mail. "His family, his brothers came out to talk to him. He did not say he was going to kill himself or threaten anyone with it but it was clear he was having some sort of breakdown."

The couple separated temporarily, with Cerina insisting Justin get his life together before returning. "As far as she knew that gun had been taken away from him," White emphasized.

A Tense Coexistence and Escalating Conflict

Cerina filed for divorce in July of last year, but the couple continued living under the same roof in their four-bedroom, 2,000-square-foot marital home, retreating to separate areas. Glennetta White insists her friend had no idea Justin still had access to a firearm. "She would not have stayed there if she knew he had a gun in the house," White stated firmly. "We already agreed the moment that you think something is not right, leave, go to your mamas."

To cope with the tense environment, Cerina took practical measures. When Justin kept consuming the children's food without replacing it, she bought a second refrigerator for her room. She installed cameras in communal areas to monitor her chain-smoking husband while she ran the family dental practice. She was determined to maintain civility for their children, Cameron, 16, and daughter Carys, 14, but court records indicate occasional violent incidents. In 2019, Cerina struck Justin with a "flurry of slaps" after discovering he was cheating. Justin's own filings included photos of a scar on his left leg from that same year.

The conflict escalated this past January when Justin called 911, alleging another assault. "Justin called 911 and had an ambulance, a fire truck, two cop cars and a gurney coming up to the door," Glennetta White recalled. "He had been recording her, trying to provoke her, trying to get anything he could use against her. On the audio he was saying 'don't hurt me, don't hurt me, you slammed my foot in a door.' But when the cops looked at the video it didn't match the audio at all. He was the one leaning against the door."

Impending Court Date and Financial Desperation

By March, the court had awarded Cerina primary custody of both children, permitting Justin visits only if he consented to alcohol testing before and after. She also asked the court to hold him in contempt if he failed to pay his share of bills or contribute to the children's $56,000-a-year private school fees. He was ordered to vacate their home by the end of April, a home he was said to have littered with hundreds of cigarette butts.

All that remained was the final property and support trial, scheduled for 10 a.m. on April 21 at Fairfax Circuit Court, set to last two days. Justin, a lawyer who had not had clients for several years, was due to represent himself. Financial filings reveal a stark decline: his earnings plummeted from $400,000 in 2023 to $11,000 a year later. In 2025, he earned nothing while accumulating over $750,000 in debt.

"I think Justin didn't want to be exposed," Glennetta White speculated. "He was shutting Cerina down from telling the truth at this hearing." She described Cerina as a "wonderful mother" and one of the sweetest people she had ever known. "Justin had already disengaged from society. But Cerina had not. She had kids to raise, a business to run, and a family who adored her. My heart is broken that her kids have lost both parents. She was talking about the future, she was thinking of coming out to Cape Town in the fall. She was moving on, turning the page."

Reflecting on Justin Fairfax, White added, "He wanted to be famous, he wanted a legacy, but I doubt this is what he had in mind. He took a big chunk of life away from a lot of people."
