ESPN Analyst Matt Miller Faces Financial Probe Amid Crash Recovery

ESPN analyst Matt Miller has announced he is stepping away from his duties indefinitely to focus on healing and recovery after a devastating car crash in Missouri that resulted in the amputation of his left arm. The announcement comes amid a law enforcement investigation into possible financial improprieties connected to charity work he reportedly conducted on the side.

Details of the Crash

On June 23, Miller shared on social media platform X that he had been in a catastrophic car crash in his home state of Missouri on June 18. According to KOAM News, Miller crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a semi tractor trailer truck on a state highway. He was airlifted to a hospital. In addition to the arm amputation, the 42-year-old suffered multiple fractures and broken ribs. “I’m focused on my recovery and taking things one day at a time,” he wrote.

Fundraising and Allegations

Following the crash, an online campaign raised over $50,000 for Miller’s medical costs, with contributions from prominent ESPN personalities such as Pat McAfee, Mina Kimes, and Adam Schefter. However, the fundraiser was paused after complaints emerged alleging that Miller had accepted payments for services—such as administering fantasy football leagues or providing scouting lessons—without delivering as promised. A Reddit thread titled “Matt Miller Leagues and Scam” detailed these allegations.

The sports news outlet Awful Announcing reported speaking to at least seven people who paid entry fees up to $500 for charity fantasy leagues that Miller was supposed to oversee. They said they could not reach him to collect winnings or information about charitable proceeds. One individual paid $500 for scouting lessons and received only a single five-minute phone call. Awful Announcing noted that over 40 additional people contacted them with similar accounts after the initial report.

Investigation by Missouri Attorney General

In early July, the Missouri attorney general’s office confirmed it had “an open investigation into this issue” and asked anyone who believed they had been misled to contact the agency. Attorney General Catherine Hanaway stated, “Missouri takes consumer protection very seriously.” Miller’s statement on Friday did not address the investigation but confirmed that his arm amputation surgery was successful, and he hopes for a prosthetic replacement. Femur and patella surgeries also saved his left leg.

ESPN Leave and Future

Miller’s statement declared he is stepping away indefinitely and will be placed on leave from ESPN to focus on healing. The Guardian understands the leave is strictly medical and likely to be extended. A source with direct knowledge told the Guardian that ESPN also plans to address the attorney general’s investigation, though the timing remains unclear. Former all-pro wide receiver Michael Thomas and Adam Schefter were among those wishing Miller a speedy recovery.
