Disney World Guest Files Lawsuit Over Arrest During Medical Crisis

A Disney World guest from Missouri has filed a lawsuit against the theme park giant and local law enforcement, alleging that staff members laughed at her and refused to call emergency services during a severe medical episode that culminated in her arrest. Halen Holton claims in court documents that she experienced symptoms of her body "shutting down" during a visit to the Magic Kingdom in April 2025, yet instead of receiving medical aid, she was taken into custody by Orange County Sheriff's Office officers.

Allegations of Neglect and Mockery by Staff

According to the lawsuit, Holton's ordeal began after a late-night journey and a missed flight, which left her fatigued upon arrival at the resort. She alleges that a domestic violence incident occurred at the park, prompting her to flee via bus. Staff subsequently arranged a taxi to return her to her vehicle, advising her to depart the premises. Later that evening, after checking into a hotel, Holton began suffering from confusion, faintness, weakness, and overheating, symptoms she described as making her unable to operate her phone or function normally.

When Holton sought help from a bus driver, she says he dismissed her, stating he needed to finish his shift. Other cast members allegedly "laughed at and minimized" her concerns, despite her informing them of her extensive medical history, which includes organ failure, complicated pregnancies, and chronic pain. Holton asserts that she repeatedly begged for medical attention, but her pleas were ignored, leading to a critical escalation.

Arrest and Jailhouse Ordeal

Officers arrived on the scene and discussed her symptoms, but when Holton attempted to leave, she was blocked by a deputy. After instructing her sister to film the interaction, Holton was arrested on charges of trespass after warning, disorderly intoxication, and resisting an officer without violence. The arrest report cites her causing a disturbance by yelling in a public area, but Holton contends she was merely seeking help during a medical emergency.

During the arrest, officers suggested an "unspecified substance" might have triggered her condition, though Holton denies any drug use. She was placed in a police car without air conditioning, where she feared for her life, stating, "I truly thought I was going to die, my body feeling lifeless." Holton was then transported to an Orange County jail, where she alleges her clothes were forcibly removed and she resorted to using soiled toilet water to cool down. After an accident in fresh clothes, which jail staff accused her of causing deliberately, she was released the next evening but not before being forced to scrub off "911 help me" scrawled on her cell door.

Aftermath and Legal Action

Upon release, Holton drove to Daytona Advent Hospital for treatment. Her lawsuit highlights that her sister also exhibited confusion during the incident, underscoring the severity of the situation. Holton is seeking damages for alleged negligence, emotional distress, and civil rights violations, arguing that the response from Disney World staff and law enforcement exacerbated her medical crisis rather than providing aid.

The Independent has reached out to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, Walt Disney World, and Disney Experiences for comment, but responses are pending. This case raises significant questions about protocol for medical emergencies in high-traffic tourist destinations and the treatment of individuals in distress by both private entities and public authorities.
