Lead detective DI Paul Davies has detailed how he tracked down the killers of Thomas Campbell, a crime that shocked Greater Manchester. In a new interview, he revealed the investigation into the murder, which was motivated by jealousy and rage.
Coleen Campbell played the perfect grieving widow, but it was all an act. She had played a key role in the murder of her ex-husband, Thomas Campbell. The pair had lived the good life together as criminals, but things soured after allegations of cheating, leading to their separation.
Plotting the Murder
Coleen Campbell plotted with criminal mastermind John Belfield to get Thomas back. Thomas was then ambushed on his doorstep and brutally murdered by three men. One of the men has never been caught.
In this week’s episode of the Manchester Evening News' new podcast, The Mancunian Way, DI Paul Davies details how he tracked down the killers to bring them to justice. He also gives an update on the investigation into the missing culprit. He is joined by Andrew Bardsley, the reporter who covered the case extensively in court.
Convictions and Extradition
The ringleader of the plot, John Belfield, was extradited back to the UK from South America to face justice after fleeing in the aftermath of the murder. He was found guilty of murder following a trial at Manchester Crown Court last year.
Coleen Campbell and two of Belfield’s associates, Reece Steven and Steven Cleworth, had previously been convicted for their parts in the crime. Steven was found guilty of murder, while Coleen Campbell and Cleworth were convicted of manslaughter in 2023.
Family Fears and Investigation Update
Thomas Campbell’s family told the Manchester Evening News of their fears that Coleen Campbell, who was sentenced to 13 years in prison, may be released earlier than expected as part of a proposed Government plan to tackle prison overcrowding.
During the interview, DI Davies described the scene he was met with at the house in Mossley as being like ‘something from a film’. The interview is now available to watch on the Manchester Evening News’ YouTube channel.
