A man has been charged with road traffic offences after giant cable spools spilled across a major road following a lorry crash.

Police locked down the northbound carriageway of the A77 at the Bellfield Interchange near Kilmarnock at around 1.30pm this afternoon. The nearby B7073 London Road was also closed at its junction with Wellpark Avenue and Billy Bowie Park after the single-vehicle collision.

Scene of the incident

Images taken from the scene showed cars driving around the large metal cable spools that had rolled onto the busy road. Cable parts could also be seen lying on the dual carriageway, with another jammed on the central reservation.

Anne White, who drove past the scene, said: "I've never seen anything like this. They were stationary when we got there but... I can only imagine how terrifying it would be if they had been flying towards you."

She added: "Drivers were just having to dodge through these things - we got through but nothing much bigger than a car will."

Road closure and charges

Motorists were urged to find alternative routes while the road was locked down. Cops confirmed that the roads had fully reopened after around five hours. There were no injuries following the crash.

Police revealed that one man had been charged in connection with a road traffic offence. A spokesperson for the force said: "The A77 northbound, Kilmarnock and the B7073 London Road at its junction with Wellpark Avenue and Billy Bowie Park have reopened following a one vehicle crash. Police were called to the scene at around 1.30pm on Thursday, August 20. No injuries were reported. A man was charged in connection with a road traffic offence."
