Miami Father Sentenced to 12 Years for Killing Son After Disney World Argument
Miami Father Gets 12 Years for Shooting Son After Disney Trip

A Miami father has been sentenced to over a decade in prison after confessing on a Ring doorbell camera to shooting his own son in the head following a heated argument. David De Jesus Contreras, aged 53, pleaded guilty on Monday to the manslaughter of his son, Eric Contreras, a 23-year-old construction management student at Florida International University.

Dispute Over Social Plans Turns Deadly

The tragic incident occurred in November 2023, after a family trip to Walt Disney World. Prosecutors detailed that the father and son had been arguing about the college student's social plans throughout the journey home. Upon arrival at their Kendall residence, the elder Contreras opened fire, fatally shooting Eric multiple times.

He immediately called emergency services, confessing to dispatchers that he had "lost it" during the altercation. When police arrived, bodycam footage captured a second confession as Contreras wailed, "I just shot my son." Officers discovered Eric's body with multiple gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Damning Evidence and Conflicting Narratives

Ring doorbell camera footage provided crucial evidence, showing Contreras tearfully explaining to his wife what he had done. "He's not breathing. He's dead. The fighting on the way home was unbearable, we got here and it was one second to the next," he said in the recording.

Initially charged with second-degree murder, the charge was reduced to manslaughter as part of a plea deal. Judge David Young sentenced Contreras to twelve years in prison, followed by a ten-year probation period. During sentencing, the judge emphasized the profound impact on Eric's friends and community.

Self-Defense Claims and Family Support

Contreras later asserted he acted in self-defense, alleging years of abuse from his son and describing Eric as a violent individual struggling with mental health issues. Family members supported David throughout the legal proceedings, and a judge previously permitted him to remain with his wife and family while awaiting trial.

However, prosecutors contested this narrative, presenting evidence suggesting Eric was kneeling or crouching at the time of the shooting. Friends of the victim strongly disputed the father's characterization, painting a very different picture of the young man.

Friends Mourn a Kind and Talented Young Man

Eric's friends expressed deep sorrow and frustration, revealing they were barred from attending his funeral and burial. "An entire community was denied the opportunity to mourn, grieve and honor his life," said one lifelong friend. They described Eric as a kind, passionate individual with a love for the arts, who sketched, painted, played instruments, and participated in sports.

His girlfriend provided emotional testimony, recounting how Eric purchased expensive textbooks for her MBA studies when she could not afford them, learned Spanish to communicate with her family, and accompanied her to visit her father's grave. "His love was the kind of love that made me a better version of myself," she stated.

Judge's Stern Rebuke and Sentencing

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Young criticized Contreras and his family for depriving Eric's friends of proper mourning opportunities. "The 12-year term behind bars is for the pain you caused each and every one of them. And continue to cause them because of your selfishness and your family's selfishness," the judge declared.

When Contreras responded, "I am the one that has to live with it and I have accepted it," Judge Young retorted, "You have to live with it, sir? Your wife has to live with it, sir. Your future grandchildren have to live with it sir. A lot of people. It's horrible."

Following the sentencing, defense attorney Frank Quintero told reporters, "Of course he's sorry. No father intentionally wants to kill his kid." The case highlights a devastating family tragedy with lasting repercussions for all involved.
