Convicted child murderer Lucy Letby has reportedly secured a sought-after new position within her prison, a move said to have sparked envy among fellow inmates at HMP Bronzefield.
From Cleaner to Coveted Librarian Role
According to sources, the former neonatal nurse, who is serving 15 whole-life sentences for murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven more, has been promoted from a cleaning job to a role as a unit librarian. The position is considered a 'top' and 'cushy' job within the prison system, involving handing out books and delivering boxsets to cells on a trolley.
A source told The Sun that Letby is 'cock-a-hoop' about her new duties, which could potentially increase her popularity if she does favours for other prisoners. "She is the librarian on her unit and that can make her popular if she gives friends what they want," the source claimed.
Enhanced Status and Birthday Behind Bars
Letby, who turned 36 on Sunday 4 January 2026, is being held in Unit 4 of HMP Bronzefield in Ashford, Surrey, a wing reserved for enhanced-status inmates. It is believed she was swiftly granted this enhanced status shortly after beginning her sentence in 2020, entitling her to privileges including a weekly visit – double the allowance for standard prisoners.
The report suggests her new role and perceived privileges have caused resentment. "A lot of prisoners are jealous," the source added. "Letby also got quite a few birthday cards and letters and the other women think she's getting an easy ride." Her barrister, Mark McDonald, confirmed she has received correspondence from members of the public while in prison.
Life Sentence and Ongoing Notoriety
Lucy Letby was convicted for crimes committed while working at the Countess of Chester Hospital. She remains one of Britain's most notorious criminals, and her 15 whole-life orders mean she will never be released.
The promotion within the prison's job system highlights the everyday routines that continue for inmates serving the most severe sentences, even as their notoriety follows them behind bars.
