Armed Police Raid Woolwich Shop After 14-Year-Old Boy Shot Dead in Daylight
Terrified locals witnessed a mob armed with machetes shortly before a 14-year-old schoolboy was shot dead in broad daylight in Woolwich, south-east London. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, prompting a swift police response and a murder investigation.
Details of the Incident
Police were called to Lord Warwick Street at 3.40pm following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Eghosa Ogbebor, who had been fatally shot. Despite the efforts of paramedics at the scene, he was pronounced dead. His next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.
In the aftermath, armed police conducted a raid on the Premier Shop near the Greyhound Pub, where witnesses reported seeing multiple individuals with machetes. A police tent has been set up outside a first-floor flat above a row of shops, with officers guarding the area, including an underpass below the building.
Arrests and Community Impact
Three teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of murder: two aged 14 and 16, and an 18-year-old man. All remain in custody as the investigation continues. The location is near the bus stop where another teenager, Kelyan Bokassa, was stabbed to death in January last year, highlighting ongoing concerns about gang violence in the area.
Local residents expressed shock and sadness, with one stating, "A lot goes on with gangs here. The saddest thing is that another mum has lost their son. It's heartbreaking." Another added, "It's getting worse and worse round here. It's usually knives, but now guns as well. It's terrible."
Police and Official Responses
Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card, leading the investigation, said, "Our thoughts remain with Eghosa's family and loved ones. We have an increased police presence around the area. While we have made three arrests, our investigation continues and I would urge anyone with any information to come forward."
London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan commented, "My thoughts are with the family, friends and wider community in Woolwich following the appalling fatal shooting. There is absolutely no place for this heart-breaking violence. I remain in close contact with the Met who have been working around the clock."
Forensics teams are searching the area, including the underpass and overgrowth. Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crimestoppers anonymously.
