On April 3, 2010, a horrifying crime unfolded in Manchester that would leave a community in shock and a family devastated. Twelve-year-old Tia Rigg was lured to the home of her uncle, John Maden, under false pretences, setting in motion a sequence of events that ended in her brutal murder just 45 minutes later.
The Deceptive Invitation
At 2:14 pm, John Maden, a 38-year-old unemployed father of one, called his sister Lynne Rigg. He asked if Tia could come to his house in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, claiming he needed a babysitter. Unbeknownst to the family, Maden harboured dark secrets. He was a secret pervert who had amassed a collection of child pornography and disturbing "snuff videos" depicting violence and death.
A Catalogue of Horrors
Tia arrived at her uncle's home just before 3 pm. What followed was a catalogue of grotesque sexual acts, during which she was drugged with the antipsychotic medication Olanzapine to sedate her. The attack escalated as Maden stabbed her in the abdomen and used a guitar wire to strangle her. Forensic tests later confirmed that some of the stab wounds were inflicted while Tia was still conscious, and although she suffered severe blood loss, ligature strangulation was the predominant cause of death.
The Chilling 999 Call
Just 45 minutes after Tia's arrival, Maden made a call to the police that would become one of the most chilling murder confessions on record. He calmly told the 999 operator, "I've just finished killing her now." When asked why he committed such a heinous act, his response was even more disturbing: "Because I felt like it." This five-word reply underscored the sheer brutality and lack of remorse behind the crime.
The Gruesome Discovery
Two police officers quickly arrived at the scene, where Maden directed them upstairs. What they discovered would haunt them for years to come. Tia was lying naked on the floor of a spare bedroom, wearing only a pair of socks, with a ligature around her neck. Her hands were tied behind her back with shoelaces, and two blood-stained knives were found near her body.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
John Maden was arrested and charged with murder. Initially due to face trial, he ultimately pleaded guilty. During the prosecution, Gordon Cole QC revealed that Maden had developed an obsessive interest in paedophilia, rape, and torture in the year leading up to the murder, maintaining an extensive library of such materials. The crime was described as murder purely for sexual gratification, featuring elements of torture, rape, and physical abuse.
Mr Justice Keith handed down a mandatory life sentence, stating, "This is one of those exceptional cases in which the only just punishment requires you to be imprisoned for the rest of your life." Maden was sentenced to spend the remainder of his days behind bars, ensuring he would never harm another child.
A Mother's Heartbreaking Tribute
In the aftermath of the trial, Tia's heartbroken mother, Lynne Rigg, paid a moving tribute to her daughter. She described Tia as her baby girl, always happy and bringing smiles to everyone she met. "Tia was my whole world," Lynne said. "I love her so much, she was my life. When this nightmare happened, it killed me inside. My heart has been broken and will never mend. All that is left is a big empty hole."
Lynne added that while justice had been done, allowing Tia to rest in peace, the nightmare would never truly end for her. She expressed her enduring love and miss for her daughter, remembering her big smile and beautiful freckled face every day.
Legacy of a Tragedy
This case remains a stark reminder of the depths of human depravity and the enduring pain inflicted on families by such violent crimes. The chilling details of Maden's actions and his cold confession continue to resonate, highlighting the importance of vigilance and support for victims' families in the wake of tragedy.
