Consumer Reports, a US consumer watchdog, has issued a safety alert after more than 400 cases of exploding glass doors on electric and gas ovens were reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in just 15 months. Over 40 people were injured in incidents between January 2025 and March 2026, with the problem affecting models from several manufacturers.
According to the organisation, many owners reported the glass shattered without warning, often in ovens that were switched off or had just been used. Nearly 70% of the incidents involved Frigidaire appliances, but reports also included GE, Whirlpool, LG, Samsung and others. The affected models were typically four to six years old, well beyond their warranty periods.
Electrolux, Frigidaire’s parent company, told Consumer Reports that imperfections or damage to tempered glass could be the cause, but insisted safety standards require any breakage to produce small, rounded fragments. Other manufacturers said their products met safety standards. Samsung is the only company offering free repairs even for out-of-warranty devices.
The CPSC stated it takes the reports seriously and is evaluating whether the products present a substantial hazard, adding it will take appropriate action as warranted. Experts recommend ensuring oven racks are pushed in before closing the door, and avoiding using the open door as a shelf for heavy items to prevent scratches or cracks.
