Tragic End for British Woman in Florida
A vulnerable British woman, Sonia Exelby, has been found dead in the United States after a man she contacted online was arrested in connection with her murder and kidnapping.
Sonia Exelby, 32, from Portsmouth, was reported missing by her family after she failed to board her return flight from Gainesville Regional Airport on 13 October.
International Investigation Launched
After UK police requested assistance via Interpol, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) opened an investigation. This led to the grim discovery of her body in Marion County on 17 October.
Analysis of her remains confirmed her identity and determined the cause of death was stab wounds.
Authorities arrested Dwaine Hall, 53, linking him to the crime through fraudulent transactions made on Ms Exelby's credit cards. He now faces serious charges, including first-degree murder, kidnapping, credit card fraud, and unlawful use of a communication device.
A Vulnerable Situation
At the time of her disappearance, her boyfriend expressed concerns on social media, stating it was believed she had arranged to meet someone and was in an "extremely vulnerable" situation.
Reports indicate that Ms Exelby had met Hall on a website and had informed him she was suicidal before travelling to meet him in person.
FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass stated, "Our agents worked with extraordinary speed and unwavering determination to ensure justice was served and closure was brought to the victim’s family. This type of violent crime and disregard for human life will not be tolerated in our state."
Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods emphasised the successful cooperation between law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, which was crucial in bringing about a swift arrest.
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed they are liaising with US authorities and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to support Ms Exelby's family in the UK.
