Toddler Found Dead After Eating Drywall and Diapers in Indiana Neglect Case

Parents in Tell City, Indiana, have been arrested and charged with murder and child neglect after their two-year-old son was found dead from severe malnourishment and dehydration. The tragic case has shocked the local community and prompted a detailed investigation by law enforcement authorities.

Grim Autopsy Findings Reveal Extreme Neglect

An autopsy performed on the infant, identified as Erik Reichard, revealed disturbing evidence of extreme neglect. Investigators discovered that the toddler had been reduced to consuming drywall and scraps of diaper before his death. Medical examiners identified a "gel-like substance" and white material consistent with paint flakes or spackling in his colon, indicating desperate attempts to find sustenance.

The two-year-old weighed just 15 pounds at the time of his death, approximately half the healthy weight for a child his age. He was described as "extremely skinny" and covered with sores and possible bug bites, according to police reports.

Delayed Emergency Response Raises Questions

Officers from the Tell City Police Department arrived at the home of Trevor Reichard-Hayes, 39, and Katherine Carter, 31, on the afternoon of March 31 after the couple called 911 reporting their son had stopped breathing. According to police documents, the parents stated they had last seen Erik alive at 11 p.m. the previous evening, nearly 14 hours before summoning emergency assistance.

Perry County emergency personnel attempted to perform CPR on the child, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A detective noted in the probable cause affidavit that "I could tell based on my training and experience that the child had been deceased for several hours. The child was blue and pale."

Additional Children Found in Squalid Conditions

During their investigation, police discovered two other children living in the same household under deplorable conditions. Both children were removed by the Indiana Department of Child Services, with one requiring hospital treatment for severe malnutrition and dehydration.

The children's rooms were found to have feces and debris on the floor, unemptied training potties, and significant insect infestations. This stood in stark contrast to the parents' bedroom, which officers described as clean and well-furnished with a made bed and no extreme clutter.

Charges Filed and Community Response

Three days after the discovery, Reichard-Hayes and Carter were arrested and charged with multiple offenses including murder, neglect of a dependent resulting in death, neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily harm, and neglect of a dependent. The mother reportedly admitted that Erik had been eating diapers, which investigators concluded was likely due to extreme hunger.

In a press release posted to Facebook, the Tell City Police Department acknowledged the emotional toll of such cases, stating: "Scenes such as these are extremely difficult for the officers, first responders, and partner agencies involved. We respectfully ask for and appreciate your prayers and support for the investigators as well as the victim's family during this difficult time."

The case continues to develop as authorities pursue justice for the young victim and ensure the safety of the other children involved.
