Three New Arrests Made in Golders Green Jewish Ambulance Arson Investigation
Counter-terrorism officers have arrested three individuals in connection with a suspected arson attack targeting ambulances operated by a Jewish charity in Golders Green, north London. The arrests occurred early on Wednesday, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the incident that has heightened concerns within the local Jewish community.
Details of the Arrests
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a 19-year-old man, a 20-year-old man, and a 17-year-old boy were taken into custody. All three were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life. Their separate homes in East London were subjected to searches by officers on Wednesday afternoon as part of the inquiry.
The two older men are British nationals, while the boy holds dual British and Pakistani citizenship. All remain in police custody at this time, with the investigation continuing to unfold under the leadership of counter-terrorism detectives.
Background of the Incident
The alleged arson attack took place in the early hours of 23 March at Highfield Road in Golders Green, near the Machzike Hadath synagogue. Four ambulances, which were operated by the volunteer-run Jewish charity Hatzola Northwest, were targeted. Hatzola Northwest provides free medical transport and emergency response services to the north London community, making this attack particularly distressing for local residents.
Previously, two men aged 47 and 45 were arrested in connection with the attack but were released on bail last Thursday pending further enquiries. The investigation has been treated as an antisemitic hate crime due to the circumstances, although it has not been formally declared as terrorism.
Police Response and Community Concerns
Commander Helen Flanagan, the Met’s head of counter-terrorism policing, emphasized the force's commitment to bringing those responsible to justice. "We know concern among the Jewish community remains high, but I hope these arrests show that we are doing everything we can to bring those responsible to justice," she stated. "The support we had from the local community since this attack took place has been incredible, and we will continue to work closely with local policing colleagues to do everything we can to keep the public safe."
Last week, Flanagan noted that CCTV footage suggested at least three people were involved in the incident, aligning with the recent arrests. The timing of the attack, occurring just before the Passover festival period, has amplified anxieties within the Jewish community.
Enhanced Policing Measures
DCS Luke Williams, who leads policing in north-west London, highlighted the implementation of an enhanced, bespoke policing plan in response to the attack. "We know local community concern continues to remain high – particularly for our Jewish communities as they now enter the Passover festival period," he said. "Since the arson attack, we have put in place an enhanced, bespoke policing plan, which has been focused around vulnerable areas not only in Golders Green, but right across London. This has involved a significant number of officers on the ground, with the aim of protecting communities, disrupting offenders, and detecting crime."
The investigation remains active, with police urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to ensure justice and safety for all affected communities.
