Three individuals, including two marine rescue volunteers, have lost their lives after a rescue boat capsized off the coast of Ballina, New South Wales, Australia. The tragic incident unfolded on Monday evening when a Marine Rescue NSW vessel overturned while responding to a yacht in distress near the notoriously dangerous Ballina bar.
Details of the Incident
The deceased volunteers were identified as a 78-year-old and a 62-year-old. The body of a third man, believed to be in his mid-50s, was recovered nearby; he was not wearing a life jacket. The rescue crew had launched in "very severe conditions," facing swells of up to 2.5 meters, which caused their "fit for purpose" vessel to capsize.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the distressed yacht came to be near the breakwall before it ultimately sank. The Ballina bar is known for its treacherous waters, and the rescue attempt occurred under extremely hazardous weather conditions.
The local community has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the volunteers, who were described as heroes for their selfless efforts to save others. Police are continuing their inquiries, and further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
