Mason Greenwood is poised to depart Marseille this summer, with Roma emerging as the frontrunners for his signature. The former Manchester United forward has attracted interest from several European clubs after a stellar season in Ligue 1, where he netted 26 goals and provided 11 assists across all competitions in the 2025/26 campaign.
Roma Lead the Chase
According to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma have made contact with Greenwood's father and the player is intrigued by the project in the Italian capital. Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Juventus have also expressed interest, but Roma appear to hold the advantage.
Manchester United to Profit
Manchester United, who sold Greenwood to Marseille for £26.6 million in 2024, included a sell-on clause believed to be up to 50% of any future transfer fee. Marseille are reportedly demanding £43 million for the 24-year-old, who remains under contract until 2029.
Financial Pressure on Marseille
Marseille are under significant financial strain after failing to qualify for the Champions League. The club must raise funds before June 30 to comply with French financial regulations, making a sale likely. Greenwood has expressed a desire to stay at the Stade Velodrome, but the club's precarious finances may force his hand.
Speaking after being named in Ligue 1's Team of the Season, Greenwood said: "This season has sometimes been difficult collectively, especially in recent months. But individually I think I've had a good season. There are some incredible players in this team of the year, so it's nice to receive this trophy. Ligue 1 is a wonderful league. We play incredible matches and, for me, it's one of the best leagues I've played in. I hope I can stay."
Fenerbahce Interest
Reports in Turkey suggest that Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi is ready to announce Greenwood's signing as part of a plan to transform the club. However, Roma's existing relationship with Marseille could give them an edge in negotiations.
Greenwood's time at Manchester United ended controversially after he was suspended in 2022 following charges of attempted rape, assault, and coercive behaviour. The charges were later dropped, but United decided he could not continue with the club. After a loan spell at Getafe, he joined Marseille in 2024.
