Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey has been formally charged with two additional counts of rape, significantly escalating the legal proceedings against the Ghanaian midfielder. This development comes as he is already awaiting trial over five separate rape allegations involving two women, alongside a charge of sexual assault against a third individual. Thomas Partey has consistently denied all charges brought against him.
New Allegations Authorised by Prosecution Service
On Wednesday, the Crown Prosecution Service authorised the two new rape charges against Mr Partey, according to sources familiar with the case. These latest allegations are understood to be historic in nature, dating back to August 2025, and involve one additional woman who was not previously part of the ongoing investigation. The footballer is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 13 March for an initial hearing regarding these fresh accusations.
Background and Current Legal Status
Thomas Partey, aged 32, currently plays for Spanish club Villarreal after leaving Arsenal in June last year when his contract with the Premier League side expired. His departure followed a season where he made 35 appearances during Arsenal's 2024/25 campaign, which saw the club finish as runners-up in the Premier League and reach the semi-finals of the Champion’s League.
The midfielder is already facing a trial under a High Court judge at Southwark Crown Court, scheduled for 2 November, concerning the original five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. He previously pleaded not guilty to two charges of rape during a hearing at the same court.
Club and Legal Responses
An Arsenal spokesperson has previously stated that the club is unable to comment on the case due to the ongoing legal proceedings, noting that Partey's contract ended on 30 June. Meanwhile, the footballer's legal representative has emphasised that he "welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name" through the judicial process.
Despite the serious allegations and mounting legal challenges, Thomas Partey remains part of Ghana's national team squad and is due to represent his country at the upcoming World Cup this summer. The footballer joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020, having established himself as a key player during his time in North London before his contract conclusion and subsequent move to Villarreal.
