In a dramatic early morning incident, a 12-year-old boy and his 16-year-old friend have been arrested after a stolen car they were in collided with a taxi in Hartlepool, County Durham. The two-vehicle crash occurred at the junction of Winterbottom Avenue and Warren Road just before 5.25am on Sunday morning, involving a red Ford Ka, which had been reported stolen overnight, and a Mercedes Vito taxi.
Details of the Collision
The Ford Ka collided with the Mercedes Vito before both vehicles struck a pedestrian barrier. According to reports, someone fled the scene before police officers arrived. The two occupants of the stolen Ford Ka, the 12-year-old and 16-year-old boys, sustained injuries in the impact. The older boy lost consciousness and several teeth, while the younger boy suffered cuts and bruises. Both were transported to the University Hospital of North Tees for medical treatment.
Injuries and Arrests
The 49-year-old man driving the Mercedes Vito taxi also sustained a head injury in the collision. He remains at the same hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. Cleveland Police have confirmed that the two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of several driving offences and will be questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police Appeal for Information
Cleveland Police have issued an appeal for witnesses or anyone with relevant evidence to come forward. A spokesperson stated: 'We would appeal for anyone with information or any relevant doorbell, dash cam or private CCTV footage who has not yet spoken to police to contact us on the 101 number or via the Cleveland Police website.' The authorities are urging the public to assist in piecing together the events leading up to the crash.
