A night of violent disorder in Southend-on-Sea has left a man with serious, potentially life-altering injuries after he was reportedly stabbed and struck by a vehicle. The incident, which unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning, has resulted in four arrests and a significant police investigation.
Chaotic Scene on Chichester Road
Emergency services, including armed police officers and paramedics, were dispatched to Chichester Road in the Essex coastal city shortly after 2am. The response followed multiple reports of a physical altercation involving two distinct groups, with some individuals believed to be armed with knives.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim with stab wounds. Further examination of the scene indicated the man had also been in collision with a motor vehicle. Essex Police have described his injuries as serious and potentially life-changing.
Swift Police Action and Arrests
In the aftermath, two suspects reportedly fled the location in a vehicle. This car was later located at Southend Hospital. A second vehicle, also suspected of involvement, was safely intercepted by authorities on the M25 motorway in Hertfordshire.
Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the assault: three men and one woman. All are being held on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. One of the male suspects remains in hospital receiving medical treatment.
Connection to Earlier Disturbance
Investigators believe this violent episode may be linked to an earlier incident of public disorder. That initial disturbance occurred near the South Street Bar on London Road in Westcliff at approximately 1am, just an hour before the main event on Chichester Road.
A substantial police cordon was established on Chichester Road at its junction with Warrior Square, remaining in place throughout Sunday morning. Officers were visibly present, guarding the extensive crime scene as forensic work commenced.
Community Reassurance and Appeal for Information
Chief Superintendent Chris Bradford addressed public concerns, stating: "I understand how concerning this incident will be to the local community today. I want to reassure you that officers have made quick arrests and we believe that those involved are known to each other."
He confirmed an increased policing presence in the area and encouraged residents to engage with officers. "This type of violent behaviour has no place in Southend and we will not tolerate it," Bradford added.
An Essex Police spokesperson issued a direct appeal for evidence: "If you have any information, CCTV, dash cam or other footage in relation to this incident, then please get in contact with us." The public can quote incident reference 42/51345/26 when reporting.
The force has directed individuals to its online reporting services available 24/7 via their website. For those wishing to remain anonymous, the independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted through their website or on 0800 555 111.
The investigation remains in its early stages as detectives work to piece together the full sequence of events that led to the severe assault in Southend-on-Sea.
