Police in Sicily have launched a detailed investigation after three men were discovered shot dead in a forest within the Nebrodi Mountains. The bodies were found in the island's eastern region, an area historically associated with mafia operations, which initially led to speculation that the killings might be connected to a Cosa Nostra feud.
From Mafia Suspicions to a Tragic Accident
However, when it was revealed that all three victims were wild boar hunters with no criminal backgrounds, detectives shifted their focus. Investigators now believe the men died in a heartbreaking case of mistaken identity, unfolding in mist-shrouded woods near the village of Montagnareale.
The Sequence of Events in the Dense Fog
The group had been searching for wild boar when Antonio Gatani, an 82-year-old hunter, reportedly heard a noise or spotted movement in the undergrowth. In the poor visibility caused by dense mist and faint light at dawn on January 28, Gatani opened fire, thinking he was targeting an animal.
Instead, his bullets struck fellow hunter Giuseppe Pino, 44, killing him instantly, and wounded Giuseppe's brother, Devis Pino, 25. In the ensuing chaos, Devis is believed to have turned his own weapon on Gatani and shot him dead.
A Fourth Hunter and the Aftermath
A fourth hunter, identified only as AS, a 48-year-old described as a close friend of Gatani, allegedly then shot the wounded Devis before fleeing in panic. He was arrested several days later and remains the sole survivor of the incident, which the Italian press has compared to a Hollywood film scenario.
According to local reports, AS has been interviewed by police but has refused to answer their questions. Prosecutor Angelo Cavallo, who is leading the investigation, stated, 'We hope that during the next questioning, he will decide to respond to our questions and will provide us with a reconstruction of what happened.'
Ongoing Investigation and Key Evidence
Detectives are meticulously examining the hunters' weapons and analyzing the trajectories of the bullets fired. A potential breakthrough in uncovering the truth lies with a webcam attached to the rifle owned by Devis Pino, though it is not yet clear what footage the device may have captured.
The investigation continues as authorities piece together the tragic events that transformed a routine hunting trip into a fatal misunderstanding, highlighting the dangers of such activities in adverse weather conditions.
