Details of the Tragic Incident
Officers from the San Francisco Police Department arrived at the scene at 10:43 pm after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered a female victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention and transportation to a nearby hospital, the victim succumbed to her injuries.
The victim has been identified as Samantha Emge, a 2025 graduate of San Francisco State University who had recently embarked on a career in interior design. The suspect, Nation Wood, 25, was detained at the scene and formally arrested the following morning.
Charges and Official Statements
Wood has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and is currently being held at the San Francisco County Jail. Supervisor Alan Wong, representing the district where the shooting occurred, commented that preliminary information indicates the act may not have been intentional.
"Early information suggests that this may not have been an intentional act," Wong told local media, though the investigation remains ongoing.
Background of Those Involved
According to social media accounts and professional profiles, Wood and Emge appeared to have a personal relationship, with photographs showing them together on Emge's Instagram page. Friends of the victim have indicated to media outlets that Wood was Emge's boyfriend at the time of the incident.
Wood's professional background includes serving as advance staff at the White House from November 2023 to July 2025, where he worked on security preparations for official visits. His LinkedIn profile shows him with former Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband during the APEC summit in San Francisco.
Wood graduated from San Francisco State University in May 2024 with a degree in political science and government, describing himself as an independent pre-event site security adviser. Prior to his university studies, he attended Saddleback College where he earned an associate's degree and played collegiate baseball.
Victim's Academic and Professional Journey
Samantha Emge studied interior design and architecture at San Francisco State University from August 2021 until her graduation in May 2025. Following her studies, she secured a position as a design assistant at Chantal Lamberto Interior Design, embarking on what promised to be a promising career in her chosen field.
The university community has expressed profound sorrow over the loss. "San Francisco State University extends its deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her during this profoundly difficult time," said Dave Knutson, a spokesperson for the institution.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact
The San Francisco Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. While Wood has been formally charged, authorities have not released additional details about the events leading up to the incident or the relationship between the individuals involved.
