Queens Blaze Tragedy: Four Dead, Including Toddler, in NYC Building Collapse
A devastating fire in Queens, New York City, on Monday afternoon resulted in four fatalities, including a three-year-old boy, and caused a structural collapse that injured multiple firefighters and residents. The blaze, which erupted shortly before 12:30 PM local time, rapidly escalated into a four-alarm emergency, mobilising over 230 firefighters and emergency medical services personnel.
Victims and Rescue Efforts
The three-year-old boy was found dead inside the property, with three adults also losing their lives; two of the adults are believed to be the child's parents. During the incident, three residents were forced to jump from the burning three-storey multi-family dwelling to escape, while the staircase had already collapsed by the time firefighters arrived, trapping the child.
Fire Department New York (FDNY) Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore described the day as "difficult and tragic," confirming three fatalities initially and noting several critical patients were taken to hospital. She praised the FDNY for doing "an extraordinary job under difficult circumstances" in extinguishing the fire and saving lives.
Injuries and Aftermath
Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while tackling the inferno, and five members of the public are undergoing medical assessment. The fire, which originated on the first and second storeys, triggered a structural failure, leading to the building's partial collapse. Thick smoke billowed from the charred property, as captured in social media footage, prompting warnings for local residents to keep windows closed.
Nearby traffic was severely disrupted, with drivers urged to avoid the area. The origin of the blaze remains under investigation by authorities, as the community grapples with the aftermath of this horrific event.
