Victoria Police have launched one of their most extensive manhunts in recent memory, scouring dense bushland near the picturesque town of Porepunkah for an alleged killer on the run.
Intensive Bush Search Underway
Heavily armed officers, including specialist search and rescue teams, are combing through rugged terrain approximately 300 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. The operation focuses on an area south of Mount Buffalo, where the suspect was last seen fleeing into the bush.
Police confirmed the search involves:
- Special Operations Group officers
- Police Air Wing surveillance
- Local uniformed police units
- Search and rescue specialists
Domestic Violence Incident Turns Deadly
The manhunt began after police responded to a domestic violence incident at a Porepunkah property around 9:30pm on Tuesday. Upon arrival, officers discovered a woman with life-threatening injuries. Despite desperate efforts to save her, the 49-year-old victim died at the scene.
Detectives have identified the suspect as Aaron Murray, described as dangerous and potentially armed. Murray was last seen wearing a black hoodie and dark-coloured shorts when he vanished into the challenging bush terrain.
Community Alert and Safety Measures
Local residents have been urged to remain vigilant and immediately report any sightings to triple zero. Police have warned the public not to approach Murray under any circumstances.
"We believe the man is still in the area and may attempt to seek help from the community," a police spokesperson stated. "Our priority is ensuring public safety while we continue this intensive search operation."
The tragic incident has shaken the tight-knit community of Porepunkah, normally known for its tranquil setting near the Alpine National Park. Local schools and businesses have been advised to maintain heightened security measures until the suspect is apprehended.
Police continue to maintain a significant presence in the area as the search enters its critical phase.
