Two Metropolitan Police officers were stabbed while attending an incident in London's Canary Wharf on Thursday. The attack took place in the bustling financial district, prompting a swift response from emergency services.
According to eyewitnesses, the officers were responding to reports of a disturbance when they were allegedly assaulted by a male suspect. One officer sustained serious injuries, while the other received less severe wounds. Both were rushed to hospital for treatment.
The suspect was subdued using a taser and subsequently arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He remains in police custody as investigations continue.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson stated: "This was a shocking attack on officers who were simply doing their job to protect the public. Such violence against police will not be tolerated."
The incident caused significant disruption in the area, with several roads temporarily closed while forensic teams examined the scene. Commuters reported delays as police cordoned off sections of the docklands location.
This attack comes amid growing concerns about officer safety, with the Police Federation recently calling for better protection for frontline staff. Home Office figures show assaults on police officers have risen by 14% in the past year.
Local business owners expressed shock at the violence in what is normally considered one of London's safest business districts. "You don't expect this sort of thing to happen here," said one nearby shop worker.
The injured officers are reported to be in stable condition, with colleagues praising their bravery. A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack is underway.
