Police officers in Florida demonstrated exceptional dedication to public service when they completed a food delivery after arresting the DoorDash driver who was found drunk and unconscious at a traffic light.
The Unusual Discovery at the Intersection
Luis Angel Alania Estrella, a 25-year-old delivery driver, was discovered in his black Toyota at approximately 8:14pm on Thursday in Cape Coral. Officers responding to the scene found the vehicle still in drive with Estrella unconscious behind the wheel while stopped at a red light.
Bodycam footage released by the police department captured the tense moments as multiple officers surrounded the car, with one shouting instructions to put the vehicle in park. The situation was complicated by a significant language barrier, as Estrella only understood Spanish.
From Arrest to Delivery Service
After officers managed to get Estrella to lower the window, they quickly turned off the ignition and removed him from the car. He was placed under arrest for driving with a suspended license and later transported to Lee County Jail.
During the investigation, Estrella expressed concern about his customer not receiving their DoorDash order. This prompted one officer to examine the delivery details and make an unexpected decision.
"DoorDash? The address that he had on is DoorDash. Is that where he was going?" the officer asked. After confirming the details with Estrella, he shrugged and declared: "I'll deliver it."
A Pattern of Police Going Above and Beyond
The Cape Coral incident isn't the first time police have stepped in to complete food deliveries. In January 2022, Sioux Falls police officer Sam Buhr delivered an Arby's order after arresting a driver with outstanding warrants.
That delivery was captured on the customer's Ring doorbell camera, showing Officer Buhr explaining to surprised resident Anastasia Elsinger: "I know I'm not who you were expecting, but your driver got arrested for some things he didn't take care of."
Sioux Falls police spokesman Sam Clemens later commented: "This isn't normal by any stretch - it's not like we have officers that are out delivering food. But the little things like this, going above and beyond, helping people out, that's what we do."
The Cape Coral Police Department stated that their officer's actions "helped ensure the resident received the meal safely and without unnecessary delay," demonstrating that law enforcement's commitment to community service sometimes extends beyond traditional duties.
