Police in Los Angeles had been called to the mansion of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele on at least six separate occasions over a decade before the couple were found brutally murdered inside their home, an exclusive investigation can reveal.
A History of Police Callouts
Records obtained from the Los Angeles Police Department show officers were summoned to the Reiners' $13.5 million Brentwood property multiple times between 2013 and the day of their deaths. The calls for service, detailed in LAPD logs, ranged from alleged family violence incidents to welfare and mental health checks.
A source close to the LAPD confirmed the frequency of the visits, stating: "There's been quite a few calls for service at the Reiner house. The West LA division of LAPD was summoned to that home on many occasions." The source added that in the quiet Brentwood neighbourhood, such a volume of calls to a single residence was highly unusual.
Detailed Logs Reveal Troubling Incidents
The police logs document specific troubling events. On May 5, 2017, at 4.04pm, a call was categorised as 'BFV INVEST', indicating a battery of family violence investigation. A full police report was filed following this incident.
Other calls included a mental health check on a male subject on September 27, 2019, and a welfare check on February 25, 2019. An early morning welfare check was also logged on August 4, 2013, at 3.31am. The final, fatal call to the property was made on December 14, when the bodies of the couple were discovered.
Son Charged in Brutal Killings
The couple's 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Prosecutors allege he used a knife to kill his 78-year-old father and 70-year-old mother. The LA County Medical Examiner ruled the deaths as homicide, caused by 'multiple sharp force injuries with a knife by another'.
Nick Reiner, who had been living intermittently in the property's guest house, made a brief court appearance on December 17. He was ordered to be held without bail and his arraignment was postponed to January 7. Prosecutors have added special circumstances of multiple murders and use of a deadly weapon, meaning he could face life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty if convicted.
The death certificates for Rob and Michele Reiner show their remains were cremated at Mount Sinai Mortuary and released to their eldest son, Jake. The place of death is officially listed as their Brentwood residence, closing a tragic chapter that was preceded by years of police intervention.
