Police across the UK have issued an urgent alert to drivers following a sharp rise in sophisticated car thefts using relay attack technology. Criminals are exploiting keyless entry systems to steal vehicles within seconds, often without leaving a trace.
How Relay Theft Works
This high-tech method involves thieves using relay devices to amplify signals from key fobs inside homes. When positioned near doors or windows, these gadgets can intercept and extend the wireless signal to unlock and start vehicles parked outside.
Most Vulnerable Vehicles
- Luxury models with keyless entry systems
- SUVs and high-performance cars
- Vehicles parked close to residential properties
Protection Measures
Officers recommend several precautions:
- Store key fobs in Faraday pouches to block signals
- Use traditional steering locks as visual deterrents
- Install aftermarket security systems with motion sensors
- Park in garages or well-lit areas when possible
A police spokesperson warned: "These criminals are using increasingly sophisticated methods. Taking simple precautions can make your vehicle a much harder target."
Regional Hotspots
While this crime affects nationwide, metropolitan areas including London, Manchester and Birmingham have reported particularly high incidence rates. Authorities are working with vehicle manufacturers to address security vulnerabilities in newer models.
