A former police officer has been barred from the service after a misconduct panel found he made a series of inappropriate and sexualised comments to three colleagues.
Pattern of Inappropriate Behaviour
Adil Mohammed, who served with Northumbria Police from 2008, resigned before he could be sacked following the allegations. A hearing last month heard detailed evidence of his conduct, which spanned several years. The panel concluded his actions amounted to gross misconduct and that he would have been dismissed had he still been serving.
One of the most notable incidents occurred in the summer of 2022. While on duty, Mohammed told a colleague, referred to as PC A: “You have a great bum, I always look at your bum.” When the officer questioned if he was serious, he replied: “Yeah, I always make sure I have a look.”
Crude Remarks and Justifications
In May 2023, when PC A informed him an inspector wished to speak to him about sleeping on duty, Mohammed responded by saying: “Am I getting told off? If I do, then please can you do it? I don’t mind bending over if it is you spanking my arse.” He later attempted to justify this comment by referencing cultural disciplinary practices involving a shoe or slipper.
The hearing also examined his behaviour towards another officer, PC B, between December 2019 and December 2022. Mohammed repeatedly commented on how good PC B’s bottom looked in uniform, discussed watching pornography, and stated he enjoyed lesbian pornography. He also disclosed that he masturbated while watching it.
Comments Made in Front of His Wife
In July 2022, while both were working at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, he asked PC B inappropriate questions about their spouse. Later, in December 2022, Mohammed was off duty and with his wife in Newcastle city centre when he encountered PC B, who was on duty. He told the officer he was going home later to “rub one out”, a comment PC B interpreted as a reference to masturbation. PC B was left perplexed that Mohammed’s wife showed no reaction to the remark.
A third officer, PC C, was subjected to similar comments between October 2022 and June 2023. Mohammed told PC C not to get “fat” after joining the police, asked to see photos from nights out, and then told them they looked “sexy” and “fit”. He also made comments about the female anatomy and told PC C they would find it fascinating to watch two women having sex.
Panel's Conclusion and Consequences
Mohammed, who left the force before the November hearing, denied all allegations. However, the panel found them proven. It also found he had breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour concerning Authority, Respect & Courtesy and Discreditable Conduct.
The panel stated his words demonstrated views that “bring discredit on the police service” and that the public expects greater respect and professionalism from officers. As a result, he will be placed on the College of Policing’s barred list, preventing him from future employment within policing.
