A New York Police Department (NYPD) officer was fatally shot in Manhattan on Monday, sparking a citywide manhunt that ended with the suspect being killed in a dramatic police confrontation.
The incident unfolded in the early hours, when the officer, whose identity has not yet been released, was responding to a call in Harlem. Authorities confirmed the officer was shot multiple times and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Suspect Engaged in Fatal Shootout
Following the attack, police launched an intensive search for the gunman, who was later located in the Washington Heights area. After a tense standoff, the suspect was shot and killed by officers.
NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell described the incident as a "senseless act of violence" and praised the fallen officer as a "hero who dedicated his life to protecting others."
Community in Shock
Local residents expressed shock and grief over the tragedy. "This is a tight-knit neighborhood, and losing an officer hits hard," said one Harlem business owner. "We rely on these brave men and women every day."
Mayor Eric Adams ordered flags to be flown at half-mast across the city in honor of the slain officer, calling it "a dark day for New York."
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the shooting and whether the suspect had any prior criminal history. The NYPD has increased patrols in the area as a precautionary measure.
This marks the second NYPD officer killed in the line of duty this year, raising concerns about officer safety amid rising gun violence in the city.
