Jibrin Isah, a resident of Erena, stated that the assault was a surprise attack conducted in the early morning hours. While residents reported at least twenty fatalities with more people missing, local police authorities provided a significantly lower casualty figure. Niger state police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed in an official statement that only three individuals lost their lives during the attack.
"Unfortunately, two vigilante members and a driver from the joint security team lost their lives during the attack, while some others were injured," Abiodun stated. However, Muhammad Tukur, another resident of Erena, told The Associated Press that those killed in the attacks numbered above twenty.
