New CCTV Sighting of Missing Brazilian Academic in Essex

Police have disclosed a fresh sighting in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of a Brazilian academic who vanished over three weeks ago. Vitoria Barreto, a 30-year-old psychologist, has been missing since March 3 after meeting a friend at Essex University in Colchester.

Timeline of Disappearance

Ms Barreto was reported missing on March 4, following her last known contact with loved ones. On the afternoon of March 3, she travelled by bus from Wivenhoe to the coastal town of Brightlingsea, a journey lasting approximately thirty minutes.

Expanded Search Efforts

Essex Police have significantly widened their search in Brightlingsea, focusing on tracing her movements between two key times. She was sighted in the Hurst Green area at around 2.35pm on March 3, and later at 12.16am on March 4 in a boat yard near Copperas Road, where CCTV appears to show her jumping over a fence.

The latest development involves private CCTV footage capturing a person believed to be Ms Barreto at 3.33pm on March 3, positioned between Back Waterside Lane and Mill Street. This sighting occurs just one hour after she was seen in Hurst Green, narrowing the timeline of her whereabouts.

International Data Challenges

Detective Superintendent Anna Granger highlighted a major obstacle in the case: accessing Ms Barreto's communication and financial data, which is registered outside the United Kingdom. "Whilst all our requests have been made through the correct international channels, at this stage we are yet to receive any data," she stated.

She emphasised that this international aspect "does pose a challenge," but assured that efforts are ongoing with support from her loved ones and the Brazilian embassy. Police are working to bridge the CCTV gap between 12.16am and 12.36am on March 4, when a fishing boat was unmoored from a pontoon.

Appeal for Public Assistance

Authorities have appealed to walkers who may have been in the area to recall if they saw anyone matching her description. "We continue to receive reports of sightings, which are followed up with particular focus," Detective Superintendent Granger noted, adding that physical searches of land, coastline, and water are being finalised.

Despite the hurdles, police remain determined to provide answers to Ms Barreto's family and friends, keeping them updated on all developments. The investigation persists as officers piece together her final known movements in hopes of locating her.
