Murder probe after grandfather dies following pub assault

Tributes are pouring in for a devoted grandfather who died in hospital days after being assaulted outside a village pub in Leicestershire.

Family's tribute to 'strong and kind' man

David Darke, aged 66, sustained a serious head injury following an attack outside the Crown Inn on Church Street in Appleby Magna. The incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, 21 December.

The grandfather-of-three was treated at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham but sadly passed away almost a week later, on Saturday, 27 December.

In an emotional statement, Mr Darke's family described him as a deeply loved father to three daughters and a proud grandfather to three boys. They said he was a much-loved brother and a dear friend.

"Dave was a strong, active, intelligent and kind person who was a friend to all," the family said. "He was a devoted family man with a deep passion for life, the outdoors, nature and walking. His life was tragically cut short and he's now reunited with his loving, caring parents. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him."

Police investigation escalates to murder

Leicestershire Police have now launched a murder investigation following Mr Darke's death. A 36-year-old man, initially arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH), has been re-arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody.

The suspect had been released on bail pending further enquiries but was detained again after the victim succumbed to his injuries.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Kevin Hames, said: "The initial investigation resulted in us identifying several witnesses and examining CCTV from the area. Those enquiries will continue and the suspect will be re-interviewed by detectives."

Appeal for witnesses in village assault

Detective Inspector Hames emphasised the ongoing need for information from the public. "It is an extremely difficult time for Mr Darke's family and specialist officers are supporting them," he stated.

"We would still encourage anyone who was in Church Street last Sunday evening and hasn't yet spoken with officers to get in touch. We need to speak to as many people as possible who can help us piece together what happened that evening."

Police are urging anyone with information to visit their website or call 101, quoting reference number 25*744889.
