Murder probe after ex-soldier found dead in flat

A former soldier described by his devastated family as a "kind caring soul" has been named as the victim of a suspected murder in Leicestershire, with police launching a major investigation.

Police Launch Murder Probe After Flat Discovery

Police were called to a flat on George Toon Court, Brook Street, in Syston at approximately 11.45am on Tuesday, 23 December. They discovered a man who was unresponsive. Despite the efforts of emergency services, the 49-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has now been formally identified as Simon Geary, a former member of the armed forces. Detectives from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU) believe he was assaulted inside the property. A 49-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Heartbroken Family's Tribute to a 'Much-Loved' Man

In an emotional statement released on Christmas Eve, Mr Geary's family paid a moving tribute to him. They said: "Simon was a much-loved son and brother. The support he has given our family will never be forgotten."

They highlighted his service and character, stating, "He was a kind caring soul who served his country in the Army and we are so proud of what he achieved in his career." The family has requested privacy as they come to terms with their loss during this profoundly difficult time.

Detectives Appeal for Crucial Information

Leading the investigation, Detective Inspector Kevin Hames confirmed that officers would be conducting extensive enquiries in the Syston area over the coming days. The EMSOU is a specialist unit that handles the region's most serious crimes.

"Officers will remain in the area over the coming days to carry out further enquiries and establish what happened," said DI Hames. "This includes examining CCTV and speaking to residents in the area."

He made a direct appeal to the public for assistance, acknowledging the festive period: "Though I know people will be spending time with loved ones over the coming days, if you have any information that could help us, please do come forward. Anything you’re able to tell us – no matter how insignificant you think it may be – could assist our investigation."
