A mother has been arrested on suspicion of drowning her newborn baby in the disinfectant tank of a portable toilet shortly after giving birth, in what authorities describe as one of the most disturbing cases they have ever encountered.
Arrest and Charges
Sonia Cristal Jiménez, aged 38, is being held without bail at the Dona Ana County Detention Center. She faces a felony charge of intentional child abuse resulting in death following the tragic incident in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Discovery at Hospital
The case unfolded when Jiménez arrived at the emergency room of Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces around 10:30 pm on Saturday, February 7. Nurses quickly observed signs that she had recently given birth, but she was without a baby.
When questioned, Jiménez's boyfriend informed investigators that he believed she was experiencing a miscarriage. The couple had been at Burn Lake, approximately six miles from the hospital, where Jiménez had used a portable toilet.
Police Investigation
Police were immediately dispatched to Burn Lake but arrived too late to save the infant. The newborn girl was found in the tank of the portable toilet, where she had apparently drowned in the disinfectant liquid.
Investigators determined that Jiménez had given birth to a live baby and cut the umbilical cord before placing the child in the holding tank. Forensic analysis revealed blue chemical in the baby's trachea, lungs, and stomach, confirming she inhaled and swallowed the liquid while alive.
Official Statements
Chief Story, a senior police officer on the case, told local media, "This is one of the most heartbreaking and disturbing cases I have encountered in my career. The blue chemical was found in the baby's trachea, lungs, and stomach, confirming that she inhaled and swallowed the liquid while alive."
He added, "We will work closely with the district attorney's office to pursue justice for this baby girl."
Legal Proceedings
Jiménez was formally arrested on Wednesday, February 11, and charged with one felony count of intentional child abuse resulting in death. She remains in custody without bond as the investigation continues.
Officials stated they do not anticipate charging her boyfriend, believing he was unaware that she had given birth at the time of the incident.
The case has shocked the local community, with authorities emphasizing their commitment to ensuring justice is served for the innocent victim.
