A Mexican sports journalist was in the middle of a live report when he was carjacked at gunpoint on Tuesday. Journalist Fernando Vargas was conducting a live interview for the Activo Deportes show 'Bla, bla, bla deportivo' from his car at a gas station in Cuernavaca, a city in the state of Morelos, located just south of Mexico City. The capital is set to host the opening match of the World Cup in less than a month.
Mid-interview, the driver's side door of Vargas' car was opened by a man brandishing a gun. On the broadcast, the robber could be heard chambering a round in his weapon before demanding, 'The key, quick. Key, phones and wallets, quick.' The show's host, Ed Martinez, watched in shock as Vargas calmly gathered several items, including his phone, before stepping out of the vehicle.
Vargas, who also serves as communications director for Mexico's National Professional Basketball League, was heard telling the robber, 'Calm down, calm down.' The video then went dark as the two exchanged words during the ordeal. It remains unclear whether the carjacker was aware that Vargas was broadcasting live on television and streaming the entire incident.
Martinez later took to Instagram to confirm that Vargas emerged from the ordeal without physical injury, though his phone, wallet, and car were stolen. 'Thankfully, he's safe, but very scared,' Martinez wrote. 'If anyone recognizes the guy in the video, please help us and report him to the authorities. This happened in Morelos.' As of the time of publication, no arrests had been reported.
