A serving Metropolitan Police detective has been found dead in a Barbados prison cell in circumstances that have sent shockwaves through Scotland Yard and the wider law enforcement community.
Detective Constable James Wheeler, 42, from Barnet, north London, was discovered unresponsive in his cell at Holetown Police Station on the Caribbean island on Monday morning. The experienced officer had been arrested just hours earlier in connection with the death of his wife, 40-year-old Stephanie Wheeler.
Double Tragedy Unfolds in Paradise
The grim discovery comes after Mrs Wheeler was found deceased in the couple's holiday apartment at the upscale Sugar Ridge Resort in the parish of Saint James on Sunday. Local authorities confirmed they were called to the scene around 5:30 PM following reports of an unresponsive woman.
According to Barbados Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Rodney Inniss, Mr Wheeler was taken into custody for questioning regarding his wife's death. He was found dead in his cell mere hours later, with preliminary reports suggesting he took his own life.
