The Metropolitan Police are leading a thorough investigation into a devastating arson attack that destroyed four Jewish community ambulances in Golders Green, with Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley emphasising that it is premature to directly blame Iran for the incident. In the early hours of Monday morning, a huge explosion was heard as the Hatzola vehicles were set ablaze, causing gas canisters to detonate and shattering nearby windows.
Investigation Details and Antisemitic Motive
The Met Police have confirmed they are treating this as an antisemitic hate crime rather than terrorism, based on initial evidence. CCTV footage has captured three individuals pouring accelerant on the ambulances before igniting them, a clear act of targeted violence against the Jewish community. An online claim of responsibility has been linked to an Islamist group with potential connections to Iranian state actors, but authorities are proceeding with caution.
Rising Threats and Community Response
Commissioner Rowley highlighted the "rapid growth in recent years of Iranian state threats" and noted an alarming trend of increased targeting of Britain's Jewish population. In response, the government has pledged to fund replacement ambulances, demonstrating support for the affected community. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and other leaders have strongly condemned the attack, calling for unity and vigilance against such hate-driven acts.
As the probe continues, police are urging the public to come forward with any information, while reinforcing their commitment to safeguarding all communities from such violent incidents.
