A young father from Melbourne remains in a critical condition, fighting for his life in an induced coma, nearly a week after a shocking and deliberate hit-and-run incident outside his family home. The manhunt for the driver responsible continues as detectives intensify their efforts to locate the vehicle and bring the perpetrator to justice.
Family Celebration Turns to Tragedy
Rayden, a 29-year-old father of four, and his wife Courtney had just returned to their Clyde North residence after a joyful family celebration in the early hours of last Sunday, shortly before 1am. The couple were in high spirits, having enjoyed a night filled with laughter and happiness with loved ones.
A Sudden and Violent Confrontation
According to police reports, Rayden and another man were standing outside the property when the driver of a dark-coloured hatchback or SUV drove past and began hurling abuse at them. In a terrifying escalation, the driver then performed a U-turn and deliberately accelerated directly towards the two men.
Rayden was tragically unable to jump out of the way in time and was struck by the vehicle. The impact knocked him unconscious to the ground, where he suffered a severe brain injury. His loved ones rushed to his aid as the car sped off from the scene without stopping, leaving the critically injured father lying in the middle of the road.
A Wife's Heartbreaking Vigil
Courtney has maintained a constant bedside vigil at the hospital ever since the attack, holding onto hope for her husband's recovery. Fighting back tears, she described Rayden as "the best dad in the world," a selfless man who always puts others before himself.
"We'd had a really good night, really happy, was laughing with everyone," Courtney told Nine News. "He'd only stepped out for maybe five [or] ten minutes when it happened. He will be in for a long recovery, but outside of that, I don't really know what that looks like or how everything will be."
A Random Act of Violence
Courtney emphasised that her family did not recognise the driver and believes this was a completely random attack. "Everyone just loves him. I just don't think I could find someone to say a bad word about him," she said. "Trouble doesn't surround him. It doesn't follow him."
She added, "Rayden is not a vindictive person. He will always extend a hand of forgiveness to those who have done things wrong to him," highlighting his compassionate nature even in the face of such brutality.
Police Investigation Intensifies
Detectives are actively working to track down the vehicle involved in this hit-and-run, examining CCTV footage that shows Rayden lying injured in the road after the collision. No arrests or charges have been made at this stage, and authorities are urging anyone with information or relevant footage to come forward immediately.
The investigation focuses on locating the dark hatchback or SUV, with police appealing to the public for assistance through Crime Stoppers. The search continues as the community reels from this senseless act of violence against a beloved family man.
