Matvei Rumiantsev, a 23-year-old man, has been handed a four-year prison sentence for a violent assault on a woman, an attack that was partially witnessed by Barron Trump, the youngest son of former US President Donald Trump, during a FaceTime video call. The incident unfolded after Rumiantsev, in a drunken state, became jealous of the victim's developing friendship with Mr Trump, aged 19, whom she had connected with through social media platforms.
Details of the Assault
The assault lasted for approximately an hour, during which Rumiantsev, described by authorities as a 'trained fighter,' dragged the woman by her hair and repeatedly struck her. In a shocking turn of events, he answered a FaceTime call from Barron Trump on the victim's phone, turning the camera to show her crying on the floor. This prompted Mr Trump to immediately call 999 from the United States to report the incident.
Emergency Response and Conviction
Simultaneously, the victim managed to call 999 herself, pleading for help as the attack continued. Rumiantsev was later convicted not only of assault but also of perverting the course of justice. This additional charge stemmed from his attempts to persuade the woman to withdraw her allegations through a phone call and a letter sent from prison. The presiding judge noted Rumiantsev's lack of repentance during sentencing, highlighting the severity of his actions.
The case has drawn significant attention due to the involvement of Barron Trump, underscoring the role of technology in both facilitating the attack and aiding in its reporting. The Metropolitan Police provided evidence that led to Rumiantsev's conviction, emphasizing the importance of swift emergency responses in such violent incidents.
