Tragic Fatal Collision on A21 Following Police Pursuit
A 23-year-old man has died following a serious multi-vehicle traffic collision on Saturday night in East Sussex, which occurred after a BMW was pursued by police officers. The incident, which involved four vehicles in total, has prompted an immediate referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for a full independent investigation.
Details of the Fatal Incident
Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway of the A21 in Robertsbridge, East Sussex, at precisely 8.20pm on Saturday evening following reports of a major collision. The driver of the BMW, a young man from Hailsham, was declared deceased at the scene by paramedics. His next of kin have been formally informed and are receiving support from specialist police family liaison officers.
In addition to the fatality, seven other individuals sustained injuries during the crash. Two passengers travelling in another vehicle were transported to hospital with serious injuries requiring urgent medical attention. Five further people involved in the incident suffered minor injuries, all of whom also required hospital treatment for assessment and care.
Police Pursuit and IOPC Referral
A Sussex Police spokesman confirmed that the BMW had been involved in a police pursuit shortly before the catastrophic collision occurred. In line with standard procedure following such serious incidents, the force has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. The IOPC has subsequently declared that it will conduct a thorough independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and the subsequent crash.
The police spokesman stated: "The driver of the BMW – a 23-year-old man from Hailsham – was sadly declared deceased at the scene. His next of kin have been informed. The BMW had been involved in a police pursuit shortly before the collision, and a referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct who have declared that they will conduct an independent investigation."
Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeal
Detective Superintendent Andy Wolstenholme, who is leading the investigation, expressed his condolences to all those affected by the tragedy. He emphasised that a comprehensive investigation is currently underway to establish the full sequence of events that led to the fatal collision. There will be increased police presence and activity in the Robertsbridge area while enquiries continue.
Detective Superintendent Wolstenholme said: "This was a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family of this young man and all those affected. An investigation is under way to understand the full circumstances and there will be increased police activity in the area while this is ongoing. I would like to thank the public for their patience during the emergency response and for their understanding as our enquiries continue."
Authorities are now appealing to the public for any information that could assist the investigation. Police are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who witnessed the events leading up to the collision, or who may have relevant dashcam or CCTV footage from the area around the time of the incident. Individuals with information are asked to contact police online or via the non-emergency number 101, quoting Operation Drummer.
