Three people have died in two separate beach tragedies within hours at popular holiday hotspots.
Fistral Beach Incident
A man and a woman were pulled from the water at Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall, on Sunday evening. Emergency services were called at around 9.45pm. A Devon and Cornwall Police spokeswoman said: "Sadly, a man and a woman were pronounced deceased at the scene. Their families have been informed, and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time." A file will be prepared for HM Coroner.
West Wittering Incident
Earlier on Sunday, a man died after getting into difficulty in the water off West Wittering in West Sussex. Sussex Police were called at around 2.30pm after two men got into trouble. Both were pulled from the sea; one was confirmed dead at the scene, and the other was taken to hospital as a precaution. The West Wittering Estate said: "The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently being established and it would be inappropriate to speculate at this time. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the man's family, friends and all those affected by this tragic incident."
Previous Tragedy and Heat Alert
The incidents follow the deaths of a mother and her 15-year-old daughter at a beach in Essex on July 22. The latest tragedies occurred as thousands flocked to beaches during one of the driest and warmest summers on record. A yellow heat alert has been issued from 9am on Tuesday to 9am on Friday for the East and West Midlands, the south-east, south-west and east of England, as well as Yorkshire and the Humber.
