A 54-year-old man has appeared in court to face trial over allegations he deliberately drove into crowds celebrating Liverpool FC's Premier League title victory.
The Alleged Incident
Paul Doyle from Croxteth, Liverpool, stands accused of 31 separate offences relating to the incident that occurred on Water Street on May 26. The alleged attack took place just after 6pm as thousands gathered for the team's victory parade.
Doyle appeared at Liverpool Crown Court wearing a black suit and glasses with slicked back hair. When asked to confirm his identity, he replied: 'Yes, I am.' The defendant wiped away tears as he entered pleas to four counts.
Charges and Victims
The charges against Doyle include dangerous driving, affray, and multiple serious assault allegations. Specifically, he faces 17 charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, nine counts of causing GBH with intent, and three counts of wounding with intent.
All seats were filled for the hearing, with more than 20 members of the press present alongside Doyle's family members and public observers.
The charges relate to 29 victims who range in age from just six months to 77 years old. The youngest alleged victim is Teddy Eveson, whom Doyle is accused of attempting to cause GBH to with intent. Seven other children, aged between seven months and 17 years, are also among the alleged victims though they cannot be named for legal reasons.
Trial Proceedings and Aftermath
Following the incident involving a Ford Galaxy Titanium, more than 130 people reported injuries according to police statements. Emergency services rushed to the scene on Water Street during what should have been a joyous celebration.
Doyle has denied all offences against him. The trial is expected to last between three and four weeks as the court examines the evidence surrounding the shocking events that marred Liverpool's football celebrations.
